Making Prisons Actually Improve Our World

Prisons have a bad reputation of turning people who committed crimes into even more successful criminals. They enter the prison system and when released they are angrier and more broken then when they got in. What if we could change all that? What if we could make them work for our communities and improve our world?

I really like the term correctional facility as opposed to prison. In my opinion that is what they should be. A place where people are taken to correct their behavior so that they can eventually return to society having learned something positive that will in turn make their lives and the lives of the people they hurt better.

The way things stand this is hard to do because no human being likes their freedom to be taken away. No human being likes to sit and be bored doing nothing and just have countless amount of time to reflect on things.

When people are bored they rebel. When people have too much time on their hands and no purpose they find ways to get back at the people who put them there. They get angry with everyone except themselves. They will want revenge on the police who brought them in, on the people who called the police or who alerted the authorities.

The worst is when rich bad people go to jail. They are able to pull strings from the inside and since they are backed in a corner do more damage then perhaps they would do from outside as now they have an alibi and no one can prove they did something bad.

If we want to correct people's bad behavior we need to create an environment for them to improve their lives and learn that there is a way back to society even if it will be with more limitations. Profitable companies that produce non lethal products should collaborate with correctional facilities in order to produce their products inside those facilities using criminal laybor.

When people are busy working they do not have time to scheme and come up with bad ways of hurting themselves or others. If the work they do in prison earns them money and dignity they won't feel like they are wasting time.

The money they earn from working in prison can help our communities by paying for the damage they caused to property or the families of people they hurt.

As things

are tax payers keep putting money into prisons and get nothing back. We support the lives of people who wronged us and give us nothing back.

The fact that the people who wronged us are in jail gives us very little comfort knowing they could be out some day, angry and wanting revenge for being locked up and having their dignity taken away. That is not the way our society should do things and history has shown us it does not work.

By working inside the correctional facility producing profitable products like cars, smart phones or other non lethal products they can pay back their dept to their family, society or whoever they wronged.

When people go to jail they stop earning money legally and so if their wife or children are outside and they are the only ones paying the bills those families are ruined.

This of course causes more problems then it solves. Not only is the criminal locked up but now he or she is not given the means to support his family or repay his dept for the crime committed.

The person is question just becomes a burden on our tax payers who are keeping him or her in there while so much more damage is being caused by the situation.

Since they are working for certain companies within prison they are already trained in working that specific job so when released they can continue working at that firm on probation with limited freedom at first and then be rewarded for good behavior.

This kind of change will be extra important for criminals who get very long sentences because they tend to just spend their lives trying to get out the illegal way and even if they finally exit the prison on good behavior they are ill equipped to return to society and usually end up back in sooner or later.
